In Canto 2 of Purgatorio, we find the gradual dawning of Wisdom. First, the pale colour of Aurora's cheeks turns orange. Dante, the pilgrim spies something like a glowing bird coming towards the shore where they stood. Virgil explains it is an angel, who with his wings oared and sailed a boat carrying about a hundred passengers. The souls in unison were singing Psalm113/114.

The soul of Casella, the musician, tells Dante about how he waited for his turn to enter the boat at Ostia to cross over to Purgatory. Dante asks him to sing a song and Casella sings a love song composed by Dante. The penitants are spellbound and gets stagnated. Now comes Cato like Moses to admonish them for their foolhardy attempt to idolize an earthly song! Stop dillydallying and get to business is Cato's battle cry. They all rush towards the mountain slope like frightened doves and Virgil and Dante follow suit.

Intention and integrity are the watchwords for spiritual growth. For that one needs Sacrifice and Surrender.
